Lineage

Shorin-Ryu (小林琉, Kobayashi-Ryu) is my primary style of karate, and was founded by Chibana Chosin. My lineage is as follows:

The Shorin-Ryu organization I came up through is the Shorin-Ryu Shorinkan, which was founded by Nakazato Shugoro. All of the kata were passed down from Itosu to Chibana, unless otherwise noted. The kata curriculum of the Shorinkan is as follows:

  1. Kihon Ippon – Created by Chibana Chosin
  2. Kihon Nihon – Created by Chibana Chosin
  3. Kihon Sanbon – Created by Chibana Chosin
  4. Fukyu no Kata – Created by Nakazato Shugoro (Removed from my curriculum)
  5. Naihanchi Shodan
  6. Naihanchi Nidan
  7. Naihanchi Sandan
  8. Pinan Shodan
  9. Pinan Nidan
  10. Pinan Sandan
  11. Pinan Yondan
  12. Pinan Godan
  13. Passai Sho (Itosu Passai) (Removed from my curriculum)
  14. Passai Dai (Tawada/Matsumura Passai) – Added by Chibana Chosin, from Matsumura via the Tawada family
  15. Kusanku Sho (Itosu Kusanku) (Removed from my curriculum)
  16. Kusanku Dai (Matsumura Kusanku)
  17. Gojushiho – Added by Nakazato Shugoro, from the Shito-Ryu of Iju Seiichi (Removed from my curriculum, replaced with Kyudokan version)
  18. Gorin – Created by Nakazato Shugoro (Removed from my curriculum)

KishimotoDi is an art that I began learning about in 2013, and began training in 2014. It is a Suidi (Shuri-te) system that is related to Shorin-Ryu, but falls more in the “soft art” category. I have no rank in this art, as there are no belt ranks in this style–only students and those with a Shihan license–but I feel that it is an important part of my personal approach to karate. My lineage is as follows:

KishimotoDi has a very small kata curriculum, consisting of only the following:

  1. Tachimura no Naihanchi
  2. Nidanbu – Created by Kishimoto Soko
  3. Tachimura no Passai
  4. Tachimura no Kusanku
  5. Shuri-Te Sanchin (Not actually part of the KishimotoDi curriculum, but a requirement for the Bugeikan)

I originally got my start in karate through training in Shuri-Ryu, which is an eclectic style of karate founded by Robert Trias. My lineage is as follows:

During my study of Shuri-Ryu, I reached the rank of sankyu (3rd degree brown belt), and learned the following kata from the system:

  1. Taikyoku Ichi
  2. Taikyoku Ni
  3. Taikyoku San
  4. Wansu
  5. Anaku
  6. Naihanchi Sho
  7. Enpi Sho
  8. Sanchin

Additionally, Shuri-Ryu contains the following kata, which I did not learn:

  1. Bassai Dai
  2. Go Pei Sho
  3. Dan Enn Sho
  4. Naihanchi Ni
  5. Nan Dan Sho (Nijushiho/Niseishi)
  6. Kanku Sho
  7. Naihanchi San
  8. Tensho
  9. Shudo So
  10. Hakutsuru

Over the course of my studies, I have also picked up additional kata from other systems. The following are the ones I can still perform, although I have modified them to suit my training:

  1. Seiyunchin (Shito-Ryu)
  2. Tensho (Goju-Ryu)
  3. Gekisai (Goju-Ryu)

Judo (柔道) is a grappling art that was founded by Kano Jigoro, which I studied for 4 years, earning the rank of gokyu (green belt), although I learned the curriculum up to what was required for shodan (1st degree black belt). In addition to learning Judo through my Shuri-Ryu lineage, I also studied Judo through the following lineage:
